I am stumped!

Ok, I need some ideas. I have had this quilt "sandwiched" for a long time. Every time I pick it up to quilt it, I don't!

I do know that I don't want an all over design, but a design that features the block.  Kind of a bad picture but you see the orange and yellow blocks come together to make a white four point star.

For those who are not sure what my set up is; I sew on a Pfaff expression 4.0 which is a home machine with a larger than normal sewing space. If you are a long armer and you have a design that might work, please pass it along.

How would you quilt this quilt?

Watch out for today's blessing!

  1. I love the Sunflowers in the border, so I would be tempted to do an overall sunflower design. I know you don't want an overall, so you could quilt the background with a filler, then emphasize the T design with a zig-zag or even a T. Good luck!

  2. Well, I commented a while ago, came to check out other suggestions, and my comment is not here. I must have clicked wrong or something. Anyway... I can see why you are puzzled with this one. My thoughts are quilting that emphasizes movement in the colored parts of the blocks, and leaves the four pointed star open for its own quilting. One sided feathers maybe all going in the same direction, or straight lines radiating out from the center of the block. Will check back to see what you come up with.

  3. I would probably quilt in the colored pieces, leaving the white stars alone, so they kind of pop. Good luck, can't wait to see what you do.

  4. I don't know how to quilt it, but it's a very cool looking block;)

  5. If this were my quilt, I would quilt a line 1/4" inside each of the 4 pointed stars (like topstitching on clothes) to highlight each star, I might even do it in a yellow or red thread. In the colored pieces I would do a small curvey or loopy overall design to play off all the angles on the quilt. I would leave the small white spaces free of quilting, and a larger stippling in the border, since it will not really show. It is a beautiful quilt.

  6. Hmm, my post also seems to have disappeared into the aether....

I had suggested stitching in the ditch around the white stars you want to stand out. Then meander with orange or red thread everywhere else on the main quilt top (including borders or not as you prefer). This way, the orange or red thread will add just enough color to the other white pieces that the white stars will really pop in the end.

  7. If you want the white stars to pop out, I would stitch in the ditch around them, and everywhere outside of them meander (stipple or something similar) in orange or red thread. This way, the other bits of white that aren't full stars will visually blend more with the orange and red, leaving the white stars as the ones that shine through.

  8. I would outline the white stars 1/4" inside them and leave them like that if that is the part of the block you want to emphasise. You could also outline 1/4" inside the coloured part of the block, not in each separate T but treating all four pieces as one large piece and echo that in the centre. Not sure if what I've said makes sense to you though, its hard to explain without drawing it! Good luck!

  9. I think that echoing around each white star and let the echos touch other echos from the other stars. I would probably use a gold thread, but you could use white or red. I know it will be gorgeous no matter what you choose!
